“Louie, wait!” I screeched. He’d taken off in pursuit of the bloody trail. Made numb by what he’d said, I thought I’d fall on my face with each unstable step I took. What did he mean that Roddy’s death might not have been an accident or suicide? What else could have caused it? And what the hell did that have to do with the coyote?

Somehow, my feet found their rhythm, though I felt like a two-year-old running all wobbly and wild, my arms out in front of me in case I took a tumble. I could barely see Uncle Louie ahead of me, just the light of his phone steadily bobbing up and down, up and down as we left the Blue Gator Grill’s parking lot behind, only darkness ahead of us for now.

“Stop!” I cried a minute later, once we were surrounded by trees whose bark looked black. Already winded by his words, I couldn’t keep up with his pace. I stopped to suck cool air into my lungs. Uncle Louie put on the skids and shined his light toward me.

A text arrived before I got my breath back. Sara again.
